    Introducing David Grant

    By Anna Whitlam | February 19th, 2009

    David Gant

Today we get to meet David Grant, our relatively new General Manager of Market U.  David joined us in September last year, and is fast making a name for himself.

The official guff on David goes something like this:

An accounting degree was the first port of call, but the industry didn’t quite hold his interest. David went on to hold Senior Marketing and Business Development roles within the Australasian Retail Banking sector. David describes himself as a ‘practitioner’ and is passionate about the Sales, Marketing and Corporate Communications professions. Having worked in similar roles David knows how to add value for clients and really partner with clients when recruiting.

‘When a client is rescoping and restructuring, I really enjoy helping with solutions to get the right people on board. Regardless of what the problem is we can bring absolute clarity on what to do’.

David says Market U was an attractive move for him because of the boutique ethos, global reach, and focus on marketing and communication recruitment. (Ed - aw shucks). What he’s not saying is how great he is in the GM role - he genuinely seems to like help people within Market U develop.

David thought he was going to use his position to avoid the ‘7 things you don’t know about me’. He couldn’t.  Here they are:

    1. I have a crippling fear of sharks (I’m blaming the 1975 Spielberg classic ‘Jaws’) . It wouldn’t matter so much, except I am an enthusiastic open water swimmer. Luckily I am highly competitive, and would quite cheerfully push another swimmer in the pack in front of me. I am also not the tastiest.
    2. I always wanted to be a performer - more the rockstar kind, rather than the lead in a panto. My mum would tell you I knew all of the words of all of the songs and was glued to Countdown on the telly.
    3. I’m a closet petrol head. I was raised by a racing circuit, and the whiff of high octane fuel was deeply embedded in my psyche at an early age (4yo). I’m a Holden man, and followed Peter Brock’s career.
    4. I have a curiously contradictory relationship with cars as a result of # 3, I aspire to drive an Astin Martin convertible, but could quite happily rev around in a Commodore Ute*[pick-up truck for those outside of Australia!]. Sometimes that identity crisis keeps me awake at night.
    5. I was once on holiday in the Greek Islands, when a very friendly group of local women handcuffed me to the bar, and refused to let me go until I …erm, um, ah…danced on the bar??!
    6. I tend to hog the microphone at karaoke, ‘Mustang Sally’, and ‘It’s not Unusual’ (Tom Jones) are the usual suspects. Market U Christmas parties will never be the same again!
    7. I’m living the life of the Scarlet Pimpernel (they seek him here, they seek him there…) by commuting between Sydney and Melbourne each week. Again, I remain in indefinite identity crisis. After living in Melbourne for 14 years, I really enjoy the culture and feel like I fit. But I love the outdoors and Sydney suits me so well for that.
